Kiowa, KS - Old Elmore Hotel
The U-Shaped, two-story brick Elmore Hotel in Kiowa, Kansas was built in 1916 next to the railroad line with earthquake shocks in the foundation to absorb the vibrations from the rail cars. In 1919, Mr. Barriger heard that the troops were passing through Kiowa, so he built a canteen at the hotel and fed the troops fresh doughnuts. The hotel passed through many hands, serving as the local rest home from 1961 to 1971. In 1971, a new owner made it the local social/supper club. It is vacant today.
