Redstone, CO - General Store

The general store in Redstone, in the Crystal River Valley of Colorado's Rocky Mountains. At the turn of the 20th Century, such structures were much humbler, when they were the homes (albeit fine by standards of the times) of workers in a "company town" owned by wealthy eastern industrialist Cleve Osgood. Osgood built Redstone to service the nearby coke ovens that, in turn, supplied the only steel mill west of the Mississippi River, which he also owned and ran, in Pueblo, Colorado. Osgood's "Cleveholm Castle" home in Redstone -- "Cleve" for his name, "holm" as the Swedish word for home (his wife at the time was Swedish) -- and a large inn that housed his supervisors still stand, along with the coke ovens and numerous, now fashionable cottages.
