Crested Butte, CO - Old Schoolhouse

The "Old Rock", once a two-story, two-room schoolhouse built in Crested Butte, Colorado, in 1883 of sandstone quarried nearby. Between 1927 and 1967 it became a storage facility for the town and occasionally a gymnasium. Then, until 1985, the Crested Butte Society attempted to use Old Rock as a museum, but it found the remodeling expenses and upkeep too costly. Afterwards Old Rock fell into disrepair. In 1993 the building was renovated and became the Old Rock Community Library, a branch of the Gunnison County Library District. Photo by Carol Highsmith.
