This house in Holcomb, in western Kansas, has long slipped back into obscurity. But it was once world-famous for a sad reason. It was the setting for the infamous murder of four members of farm family in 1959 that led to the writing of one of the first "true-life" crime story best-sellers: "In Cold Blood," which was later turned into an even scarier movie. The book is credited to famed author Truman Capote, but others argue it was her friend from Alabama, Harper Lee, who actually wrote it. Herself an accomplished writer (of the equally famous "To Kill a Mockingbird"), Lee at a minimum participated in interviews for "In Cold Blood." Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2021.
