Show windows decorated (apparently some time ago) for Christmas at the once-majestic but long-closed (as of 2021) Hotel Windsor in Garden City, a small city in southwestern Kansas. So grand was the establishment when it was completed in 1889 that it was soon called "The Waldorf of the Prairie." But by the 1970s it had degraded to the point that it was allowed to rent only a portion of its rooms, and in 1976 after a critical inspection, it was forced to close. And close it remained. Why not knock it down? Says the local tourist bureau, "What's Paris without the Eiffel Tower?" Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2021.
