At first glance, this may look like a plucked chicken spreading its wings. It's not, but what it is is also quite unusual. It's a large, decorative cow skull surrounding the entrance to . . . not a steakhouse but the town laundromat in Dubois, Wyoming. The town in mountainous Fremont County is quirky by nature. It was founded as "Never Sweat," owing to its surprisingly dry though warm climate. But in the 1920s, the U.S. Postal Service rejected such an unseemly name, and the town was renamed "Dubois," after a U.S. senator of French-Canadian origin who served in the area when it was part of Idaho Territory. Townspeople refused to refer to the place by its French pronunication, however, preferring "DEW-boys," with the accent on the first syllable. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2016.
