Crude gasoline pump at the boyhood farm of America's 39th president, Jimmy Carter, in the little community of Archery, Georgia -- now part of the only slightly larger town of Plains, with which President Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, a Plains native, are usually associated. This was a place to be celebrated, as it brought running water into the Carter household for the first time. In the years before and during the Great Depression, Jimmy Carter's father, Earl, grew cotton, corn, and sugar cane and was one of the first Georgia farmers to introduce peanuts as a crop.
