The Desert Sands Motor Hotel in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was built on Route 66 in 1957 and served travelers for decades. In later years, it was prirmarily used for long-term housing before it closed in May 2016 after an arson fire. The building was torn down in December 2016 and its iconic sign was sold.
