Hancock, MI - Quincy Mine Hoist Building

To raise ore and lower workers, the Quincy Mining Company built the worlds largest steam-driven mine hoist in 1918. It was housed in this Hoist House, a reinforced concrete building built in the Georgian architectural style with brick veneer and Italian-tiled walls, that the workers cleaned daily. They even put fancy imported tiles on the roof, but didn't think it through as the area's harsh winters quickly broke the tiles.
