Junction City, KS - Williams Cigar Store

This "cigar store Indian" was not a carving but a sign, bearing the likeness of a Native American chief, for one of what were once several (hand-rolled) cigar makers in Junction City, a small city between Manhattan and Abilene, Kansas. The other side of the sign advertises the J.C. Cigar Bar, an up-to-date business that replaced the Williams operation. Tobacco smoking and chewing are popular in many U.S. rural areas; once Junction City boasted several operations that produced hand-rolled cigars. Their going was tough because of Kansas's long and fierce winters. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2021.
