The historic Kress Building in Wichita, which, although having only about 385,000 residents, is the largest city in the Midwest-U.S. city of Kansas. The five-and-10-cent store chain began operations in Wichita in about 1908. Samuel Henry Kress opened more than 260 such stores on “Main Streets” throughout America. This “new” five-story Kress Building, with its Renaissance facade, Art Deco features, and Gothic parapet, opened in Wichita in 1930. The store closed in 1968. It is still (as of 2021) owned by the Kress company and has been undergoing renovations. Photo by Carol Highsmith.
