Narrow, one-floor "shotgun houses" in the 50-block historic district of Donaldsonville, the seat of Ascension Parish, Louisiana (the state calls its counties "parishes") along the west bank of the Mississippi River. Such cottages got their name from accounts of shotgun blasts from the front door reaching clear through a series of rooms and out the back door. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2021.
