Bedroom inside the Brick Dwelling building, where residents were segregated by sex, at Hancock Shaker Village in Hancock, Massachusetts, established in 1791. One of several Shaker communities established between 1783 and 1836, the village was closed in 1960 and sold to a local group that operates the property as a living history museum. It takes its name from a Christian sect once described as the “Shaking Quakers” for its members’ ecstatic religious worship services. Photo by Carol Highsmith 2019.
