Portland, ME - Flatiron Building

The flatiron-shaped H.H. Hay Company Building in downtown Portland, Maine. Built in 1826 as a two-story building and later expanded, it became home, in 1841, to a noted apothecary at street level -- which for 52 years dispensed medicines and flavored syrups that it also exported around the world. Upstairs were a dentist's and other offices. This was known locally as the "lower" Hay Building. There was also an "upper" Hay building, also angular in shape. The two Hay buildings "bookended" the blocks between them. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2017.
