Scene from Fort Allen Park at the busy harbor on Casco Bay in Portland, Maine's largest city. Fort Allen was a fortress high on Munjoy Hill, overlooking the harbor, during the War of 1812. When British ships arrived, the U.S. commandant ordered them to turn tail and leave, which they did because the ships' guns could not fire up steep hills at the fort's array of cannons. The area is now a park and home to the city's memorial to those lost in the terrorist attacks on the United States on 9/11/2001. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2017.
