Osawatomie, KS - Adair Cabin Interior

A portion of the interior of the "Adair Cabin," the headquarters of firebrand abolitionist John Brown owned by his brother-in-law, Samuel Lyle Adair — now (as of 2021) part of the John Brown Museum State Historic Site in Osawatomie, Kansas. With about 30 Free State guerilla fighters, Brown fought 250 pro-slavery militiamen in 1856, during the pre-Civil war "Bleeding Kansas" period when the area was a hotly contested U.S. territory. He would later move east and lead a slave rebellion in which he was captured and later hanged by U.S. forces. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2021.
