By 1853 what Krug started in the restaurant basement was producing 300 barrels of beer a year. Jospeph Schlitz took over the brewery when Krug passed away in 1856, and just three years later was selling about 2,000 barrels a year under the name Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company.
