Up to 2,500 people died in the Peshtigo Firestorm in Wisconsin on October 8, 1871. Though the headlines were stolen by the Great Chicago Fire the same day, the Peshtigo Firestorm of 1871 remains the deadliest fire in recorded U.S. history. This Cemetery behind the Fire Museum in Peshtigo is dedicated to the lives lost on that tragic day. Photo by Kathy Alexander.
