Butte, MT - Dumas Hotel-Brothel

The infamous Dumas Hotel, a notorious, high-class brothel (sometimes called a "parlor house" in its day) in Butte, Montana, a thriving late 1800s and early 1900s gold, silver, and copper mining boomtown. Its interior rooms included both doors and windows so customers could "shop" for women of their choosing. Prostitution was never legal in Montana, but it was tolerated in free-wheeling Butte until a sheriff ordered the Dumas closed in 1982. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2022.
