The Grand Theatre in downtown Grand Island,
Nebraska, opened in 1937 as an opulent movie theater on the site of the previous New Grand Theatre that was destroyed in a fire the year before. The theater closed in 1986 but was rescued and remodeled in classic Art Deco style by volunteers and operates again (as of 2021). Though landlocked and thousands of miles from any ocean, the city gets its name for a large island in the Platte River that runs through town. The island was washed away by tides and times, but the city remains. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2021.
