The Zia Motor Lodge, in Albuquerque New Mexico was built in about 1938, right after Route 66 was realigned to come straight through Tijeras Canyon rather than detour up through Santa Fe. As a motor lodge, there were open carports next to each unit. Many years later the Zia Lodge became a home for druggies, criminals, and various traveling street people. The mayor's task force had the property condemned as being substandard housing. Though the motor lodge is long gone today, the sign still sits at 4611 Central Avenue NE. Photo by John Margolies, 2003.
