Carrizozo, NM - Building

A sampling of an installation that some call “outsider art” in the small south-central New Mexico town of Carrizozo, population 1,000 or so (as of 2021). It was created, and opened for public enjoyment, by Leroy Lopez, a prison guard and old-car fancier and fixer-upper. He calls the place Little White Oaks after White Oaks, a Lincoln County, New Mexico, boomtown turned ghost town. Lopez himself made all the buildings out of scrap pieces from abandoned buildings. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2021.
