Shocking yellow is the color of choice for much of what’s related to Ortega’s Indian Market on historic U.S. Route 66 in Gallup, a small city near the Arizona border in far-western New Mexico. Gallup got a mention in the lyrics of the hit “Get Your Kicks on Route 66” song about the Chicago-to-Santa Monica “Mother Road” that was the United States’ first interstate paved road: “You’ll see Amarillo/ Gallup, New Mexico/ Flagstaff, Arizona/ Don’t forget Wynonna” and so forth.
