In the central-western North Dakota stretch of North Dakota where Richardton lies, it's not unusual to find interesting small country churches — not this sort of grand structure. It's the Assumption Abbey, built by a Swiss monk in 1883 (abbeys are buildings housing monks or nuns). There is (as of 2021) an active Catholic church — St. Mary's — associated with the abbey.
