Sign denoting the passage of the Lincoln Highway through town in DeKalb, Illinois. Begun in 1913, the 3,389-mile-long highway, now U.S. Highway 30 — named for onetime U.S president Abraham Lincoln — was one of the first transcontinental two-lane highways across America, eventually connecting Times Square in New York City on the East Coast to Lincoln Park in San Francisco on the Pacifc Ocean.
