The gigantic 1894 Salt Lake City-County Building, the seat of local government in Salt Lake City, the capital and largest city in the western state of Utah. Like other Salt Lake City landmarks, the building stands near a seismic fault line, and it has undergone several "earthquake-proofing" renovations, including the installation of an elaborate "base isolation system" that separates some of the structure from the rocks below.
