Part of the old Audrey Mine headframe in the old mining boomtown of Jerome, on Cleopatra Hill overlooking the Verde Valley in Yavapai County, Arizona. In the heyday of its rich copper mines in the 1920s, more than 10,000 people found a place to live there. By 2010, the fulltime population was 444 — but it fills with tourists many days of the year. A headframe — sometimes called a gallows frame — is a winding tower, hoist frame, or headgear atop a deep mine shaft. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2018.
