Dayton, OH - Arboretum
Gateway and chapel buildings, completed in 1889 at Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum in Dayton, Ohio -- one of the oldest "garden" cemeteries in the United States. Woodland was incorporated in 1842 by John Whitten Van Cleve, who had been the first male child born in Dayton. The highest point in Dayton can be found within the cemetery, and during the Great Dayton Flood of 1913 that destroyed much of the city, it became a place of refuge. Photo by Carol Highsmith.
