Mansfield, OH - Old Ohio State Reformatory Cellblock
A cellblock at the old Ohio State Reformatory, built in stages between 1886 and 1910 in Mansfield, Ohio. At first the facility emphasized rehabilitation of young, first-time offenders, but eventually this maximum-security cellblock was added and the prison opened to hard-core criminals. The Reformatory remained in full operation until 1990 when it was closed via federal court order as the result of prisoners' class action suit citing overcrowding and inhumane conditions. The sprawling building was used in a number of movies and TV shows -- notably the 1994 film "The Shawshank Redemption." Now opened to public tours and ghoulishly decorated for the scare-inducing Halloween holiday, the reformatory is now (2016) owned by the Mansfield Reformatory Preservation Society.
