Tulsa, OK - Public MArket

The 1929 Art Deco-style Tulsa Public Market and Tower were abandoned and nearly demolished in the 1970s on historic U.S. Route 66, which still runs through Tulsa, Oklahoma, years after the highway was the beloved paved, cross country “Mother Road” that popularized family auto travel from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California. The building was saved by the Home Depot home-improvement chain, which opened a store in the warehouse behind this facade. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2020.
