The neon-enhanced eastern gateway to the Tulsa, Oklahoma, portion of historic U.S. Route 66, the first intestate paved highway, parts of which still wind through Tulsa. The “Mother Road,” as it was known, connected the Midwest and West from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California. Many quirky remnants of the much-traveled (and loved) road as nostalgic reminders of the glory days of auto travel. There’s a similar gateway on the west side of town. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2020.
