Lucille’s — a local legend in tiny Hydro, along U.S. Route 66 in western Oklahoma. In 1941, Lucille and Carl Hamons bought and began running an existing gas station built in 1929 along the famous highway, along with a few motel units out back. Wartime fuel shortages, Carl’s death, and the opening of an interstate highway right next to the place almost crushed the business, but Lucille persevered at the place she called “the mother of the Mother Road” until her own death in 2000.
