Tulsa, OK - Meltdown Diner

The venerable Meltdown Diner, where varieties of toasted-cheese sandwiches were the specialty along historic U.S. Route 66 as it winds through Tulsa, Oklahoma. Called “The Mother Road” by its aficionados, Route 66 was the original paved, mostly two-lane highway that ran from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California during the “Golden Age of Driving” in the 20th Century. Only pieces remain in many locations, including Tulsa. The diner closed in 2019. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2020.
