Craggy cliffs surmount a butte in Capitol Reef National Park, one of the majestic "Mighty Five" national parks popular with visitors, near the town of Torrey in the western U.S. state of Utah. Early white prospectors gave the park its name. Many had nautical backgrounds and likened the imposing cliffs of the park to reefs that hinder ship traffic; the "capitol" reference was inspired by various whitish-rock domes — one in particular — that loom among otherwise red formations in the park.
