Door County is named after the strait between Door Peninsula and Washington Island in Wisconsin. This passage is dangerous, with many scattered shipwrecks. The French called this area where Green Bay opens to Lake Michigan "Porte des Morts Passage," meaning "Death's Door." Photo by Kathy Alexander.
