Salt Lake City, UT - Covered Wagon Motel Sign

The Covered Wagon Motel in Salt Lake City, Utah, was named for the Mormon overland pioneer trek in 1847. An auto court typical of its era, it was located at 230 W. North Temple, just a block and a half west of famed Temple Square. Providing 36 one and two-room units, each unit featured room controlled refrigeration, Radio, TV, and phones. The Covered Wagon was among a select few listed in Duncan Hines' discriminating guide, Lodging for a Night, in 1953. Later its name was changed to the City Creek Inn. Both are gone today, replaced by the 130-unit City Creek Apartments aimed at upscale buyers. Photo by John Margolies 1980.
