Death Valley, CA - Artist Palette

Artist's Palette in Death Valley National Park, California is noted for having various colors caused by the oxidation of different metals. Sitting on the face of the Black Mountains, this area is the result of Death Valley's most explosive volcanic periods. Known as the Artists Drive Formation, chemical weathering and hydrothermal alteration are also responsible for the variety of colors. Photo by Kathy Weiser-Alexander.
