Everglades National Park, FL - Tamiami Trail Panther Sculpture

Sculpture of a Florida panther along the Tamiami Trail route through the Everglades, an ecosystem in South Florida that is unlike any other in the world. It is a unique mixture of estuarine waters, mangroves, freshwater marshes, cypress swamps, flat pine forests, and hardwood “hammocks” (rarely flooded high spots) among vast sawgrass plains. It is thought that there are (as of 2020) only 125 or so of the highly endangered smallish cougar-like cats remaining in the remote preserve. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2020.
