The West Dummerston Covered Bridge over the West River, outside West Dummerston, Vermont. Built in 1872, this is a "two-span" bridge -- not meaning that there are separate side-by-side spans across the river. The term means that the long bridge is, in effect, one bridge of two spans in length -- this one totalling 280 feet -- supported by a heavy buttress in the middle of the river.
