Figure of a purple cow at Storybook Land, a family attraction in Aberdeen, a small city in northeast South Dakota that was founded by a railroad executive whose boss was born in Aberdeen, Scotland. Hence the choice of the new town's name. The park presents a fanciful interpretation of children's fairy tales and the legendary book and movie, "The Wizard of Oz." For reasons not entirely clear, purple cows are popular as symbols of many American products, from tobacco to ice cream soda flavors. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2021.
