The Stockgrowers' Bank Building was long the center of the area's cattle-raising industry in Fort Pierre, a small city across the Missouri River from the South Dakota capital city of Pierre, both of which are pronounced "Peer" rather than the expected "Pee-AIR." Fort Pierre stands where trapper-businessman Pierre Chouteau, Jr., organized the trading post that started the settlement in the 1880s. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2021.
