Fort Pierre, SD - 1906 Depot

The 1906 Fort Pierre Depot of the Chicago North Western Railroad, now (as of 2021) a rail museum in the small city across the Missouri from the South Dakota capital city of Pierre, both of which are pronounced "Peer" rather than the expected "Pee-AIR." Fort Pierre stands where trapper-businessman Pierre Chouteau, Jr., organized the trading post that started the settlement in the 1880s. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2021.
