The Joy Cabin, on the grounds of the Animas Museum, a local-history museum operated by the La Plata County Historical Society in the 1904 City School Building, a three-story sandstone structure constructed in 1904-1905 in what was then Animas City (on the banks of the Animas River -- El Rio de las Animas Perdidas, or River of Lost Souls) above what is now Durango, the seat of La Plata County in southern Colorado. Built in the 1870s, the Joy Cabin is said to be the oldest intact structure left in the Durango area. The 16 x 25-foot foot log cabin was restored and interprets life in the early pioneering days of Animas City. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2015.
