Soccorro, NM - Val Verde Hotel and Steakhouse

The corner, and an a weathered sign, of the 1919 Val Verde Hotel and Steakhouse in Socorro, a small city in central New Mexico. The name, which translates in English as "help" or "aid," references a visit to the nearby desert by Spanish conquistador Juan de Oñate and a group of Spanish settler, who were given food and water by resident Indians. The property has been closed long enough (as of 2011) to be included on several "haunted places" routes around the American holiday of Halloween. Photo by Carol Highsmith.
