The 1886 Memorial Chapel building at Hampton University, a historially black university in Hampton, Virginia, one of the state’s Tidewater-region cities at the place where the James River, Chesapeake Bay, and Atlantic Ocean converge. In its early days, what was then a small college called Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute was also a place of study for many American Indians. [NOTE: Search under “Hampton Institute Johnston” in the Prints & Photographs Online Catalog to see several images taken there by photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston.]
