Buffalo Soldiers originally were African-American members of the U.S. 10th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army, formed on September 21, 1866 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Later, however, the term, which was given to them by the Native Americans tribes they fought, became synonymous with all of the black regiments who fought in the American West.
