Welch, WV - Mural

Gigantic 2009 mural by Tom Acosta in the distressed Appalachian town of Welch in southern West Virginia, depicting the town's halcyon days. Artist Acosta is a Welch native and practitioner. Incorporated in 1893, Welch became a prosperous city in the first half of the 20th century with the opening of railroads and coal mines throughout the region, when Welch proclaimed itself "The Heart of the Nation's Coal Bin."
