Barracks at the Fort Scott national historic site in the southeast Kansas city also named Fort Scott. Named for U.S. general Winfield Scott and established in 1842, the fort became a staging ground and safe haven during the "Bleeding Kansas" years before and during the U.S. Civil War of the 1860s, when the area was a nominally free border state battleground between forces favoring and opposing slavery.
