View of the U.S. Army's Fort Scott in the Kansas town of the same name. The fort preceded the town, which was laid out in 1855, two years after the fort was abandoned. Both are named for Army general Winfield Scott, who served in three American wars and supervised the "removal" of thousands of eastern American Indians to remote western lands in a forced march along what was later called the "Trail of Tears."
