One of many steep and rugged hillsides forms a backdrop for the Dosie Dairy Bar in Pikeville, an eastern Kentucky city named for General Zebulon Pike, the explorer who discovered Pikes Peak in Colorado. Pike had no known connection to Kentucky, but several U.S. communities honored him after his death in battle during the War of 1812. The small city, near the West Virginia and Virginia borders, felt the brunt of the Hatfield and McCoy clans’ (or families’) fueds that spilled over into West Virginia. Photo by Carol Highsmith, 2020.
